CONOCO PHILLIPS: ChevronTexaco redux

New: ConocoPhillips name and logo

Launched: September 4, 2002

Story in brief:
Continued consolidation in the oil patch, in the wake of ChevronTexaco and ExxonMobil. The idea, "Two good companies, both pioneers, make one great company."

The logo is strictly corporate. Its integral symbol is meant to represent "upward movement and progress."

Credits:
C.E.O. - James J. Mulva
Identity strategy and design - Internal; Addison (SF) contributed

First Impressions:
Workmanlike, but not particularly inspiring. The handling of round and vertical letterforms seems unresolved. The symbol, seen first in black, struck me as a flying memo; I liked the thought.

A larger concern is that this name decision contributes to the growing impression of industry concentration, of return to the classic oligopoly.
